Vp of Outreach Candidate

My name is Lauren Brown and I am excited to seek election to the Willamette Valley PMI’s board of directors as Vice President of Outreach. For those of you who don’t know me, I am originally from Eugene and have recently relocated to the Greater Bend Area. For the past eight years, I have worked as a project manager, producer, and multimedia specialist. 

My combination of experience in multimedia and communications as well as business development makes me a strong candidate for this position. My background includes video and audio production, streaming media, social media management, and website development. 

I have served two terms as Board Treasurer for the Middle Eastern Dance Guild of Eugene. In this position, I was responsible for budget forecasting for events with attendees numbering in the hundreds. I have also served on multiple committees with the purpose of event planning and membership outreach. Including a large theater production that resulted in a 25% increase in revenue for the organization. 

In order to increase value for the organization, I strongly feel that it is important to reach out to the community and attract those who may not be aware of the PMI. Positioning ourselves to attract those who may not yet be project managers, are project managers but do not currently hold certifications, or individuals who perform project management as part of another role will be vital to the continued growth of the Willamette Valley chapters. 

I envision a campaign welcoming those who may have limited experience in PMI standards to join us in monthly meetings and other events, thereby creating a welcoming environment for learning and growth. Creating strong relationships with colleges and universities, particularly those with strong management emphasis in their curriculum, such as the Oregon Institute of Technology, will position the chapters to attract emerging professionals. By doing so, we can assure the future of the local chapters by having a strong roster of members from diverse backgrounds. This will enable us to hold more engaging events, have a broader pool of volunteers, and add value to our community.

Corvallis Branch President Candidate

Hello All! My name is Michael Nelson and I would be honored to serve on the Willamette Valley PMI’s board of directors as Corvallis Branch President.  I’m a recent Oregon transplant as of July 2019 with my wife’s acceptance into medical school bringing us to the region.  I’ve spent the last seven years working in employee benefits from retirement plans to health and welfare.  I’ve spent nearly 5 years working as a project manager for a benefits administration company headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa during that timeframe.

As an HR Technology Consultant, my current role with Lockton Companies, I leverage my expertise in benefits administration platforms to provide, among other services, project management oversight to clients transitioning from one technology solution to another.  With an informal style, I consciously try to maximize results by curating an environment that makes “doing the work” fun and cohesive without sacrificing results.

I also volunteer my time as my college fraternity’s corporation board and board of trustees President.  During my tenure, I’ve navigated the restating of the articles of incorporation, creating and establishing procedures around financial processes, creating opportunities for remote board members/volunteers with G Suite, and coaching members through building sustainable practices for future generations of members.

My focus for the PMI Willamette Valley chapter would be to find new and exciting ways to engage the membership and create an environment of inclusivity with our community.  In the earlier parts of my career, I remember being intimidated by the prospect of joining an organization with members who I perceived as having a much higher degree of knowledge than myself.  Looking back, however, I wish I would have been exposed to professional organizations to build my network and increase my knowledge.  I believe the central valley chapter’s location provides it a unique opportunity in relation to two major Oregon education institutions being in such close proximity.  I envision creating a bridge to talent with the younger members of the community to open their eyes to the field of project management and the tools it provides you – no matter what career path you find yourself in.

In addition to maintaining the processes and procedures of the chapter I would look to explore ways to optimize and enhance the organization’s functions.  I’m a firm believer in continuous process improvement and finding the better way.  In my spare time, you’ll finding me reading books and consuming literature on behavioral psychology and decision architecture – tailoring approaches to what we know about how humans process information has helped me have better experiences in past projects.  Ultimately, I look forward to engaging members of the community, building new connections, and accomplishing our mission while having fun doing it.
